Serra do Caraça, located between the municipalities of Santa Bárbara and Catas Altas in Minas Gerais, is formed by seven main peaks that captivate visitors and adventure seekers: Pico do Sol, Pico do Inficionado, Pico da Carapuça, Pico da Canjerana, Pico da Conceição, Pico Três Irmãos, and Verruguinha Peak. Each of these mountains has its own identity and offers a unique experience surrounded by the region’s rich and preserved natural landscapes.
At 1,650 meters (5,413 feet) above sea level, Verruguinha Peak is the lowest among the seven peaks, yet no less impressive. It is an excellent choice for hikers looking for a moderately challenging trail, scenic views, and a sense of isolation and tranquility that only the mountains of Serra do Caraça can provide.
As with all trails within the sanctuary, visiting Verruguinha Peak requires the mandatory accompaniment of a certified guide. This ensures visitor safety, proper orientation, and compliance with the regulations of the Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN).
The trail to Verruguinha Peak
Access to Verruguinha Peak covers approximately 7 kilometers (round trip) and begins near the base of Pico do Inficionado. Although it is considered one of the least physically demanding trails in Serra do Caraça, the route still requires good physical conditioning and coordination, as it includes uphill sections and stretches of dense forest.
Because it is a rarely visited trail, some segments are barely visible and often merge with paths created by wildlife, especially tapirs. Even so, attentive hikers may notice traces of old routes once used by muleteers and travelers who crossed this area on their way between Mariana and Ouro Preto, turning the hike into a journey through both nature and history.
As the ascent progresses, the landscape gradually opens up, revealing sweeping views of the Caraça Valley and the imposing rock formations that define the region. This trail is ideal for those seeking peace, solitude, and a deeper connection with nature, far from the busier and more popular routes.
Summit views and experiences
From the top of Verruguinha Peak, visitors are rewarded with a privileged panoramic view of the Caraça Sanctuary and the surrounding mountain ranges. The summit is small, yet it offers one of the most charming viewpoints in the region, especially at sunrise or late afternoon, when sunlight highlights the contours of the mountains and the lush green valleys below.
Standing at the summit and contemplating the vast silence of Serra do Caraça is an experience that blends emotion and serenity. Many visitors describe a strong sense of connection with the history and spiritual presence of the place, which for centuries has inspired explorers, naturalists, and religious travelers.
Preservation and visitor guidelines
Verruguinha Peak is located within the Protected Zone of the RPPN Caraça Sanctuary, officially recognized by ICMBio under Ordinance No. 189/2013. Daily visitation is limited to 11 people, including the guide—an essential measure to preserve the local ecosystem and minimize impacts on native flora and fauna.
During the rainy season, access to the trail is suspended for safety reasons, as rising stream levels, slippery terrain, and frequent lightning make the route hazardous. Visitors must schedule the hike in advance and strictly follow the guidelines provided by the sanctuary and certified guides.
Despite its more modest elevation, Verruguinha Peak invites contemplation and adventure, standing out as one of the discreet yet unforgettable natural treasures of Serra do Caraça.
