Canjerana Peak in Serra do Caraça, Minas Gerais

The imposing Serra do Caraça, located between the municipalities of Catas Altas and Santa Bárbara, is formed by seven main peaks: Pico do Sol, Pico do Inficionado, Pico da Carapuça, Pico da Canjerana, Pico da Conceição, Pico Três Irmãos, and Pico da Verruguinha. Each of these peaks represents a unique challenge, marked by demanding trails, breathtaking landscapes, and a deep connection with nature.

Visiting any of these summits requires physical preparation, good coordination, and—above all—the mandatory accompaniment of certified guides registered with the Caraça Sanctuary. This ensures a safe experience and respect for the natural environment of the region.

Trail and characteristics of Canjerana Peak

Canjerana Peak rises to 1,890 meters (6,201 feet) above sea level and is considered one of the more accessible routes among the seven peaks of Serra do Caraça. The trail is approximately 12 kilometers long (round trip) and offers a long hike with lower technical difficulty compared to the other peaks.

The route begins at Campo de Fora, an area near the sanctuary, and ascends gradually in a zigzag pattern toward the summit. Along the way, the beauty of the landscape helps ease the physical effort, revealing scenery typical of the Espinhaço Mountain Range, with rocky grasslands, wildflowers, and striking rock formations of high ecological and visual value.

The view from the top is striking and full of contrasts. On one side, visitors can see a mining area that marks the boundary of the reserve; on the other, the gaze stretches across green mountains and the majestic horizon of Serra do Caraça, framed by a silence that invites contemplation.

A natural viewpoint of rare beauty

In addition to the summit of Canjerana Peak, there is a special spot for those who still have energy on the return hike: the Belvedere. Located slightly below the main peak, it offers stunning views of the Caraça Valley and is considered by many guides to be one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the region.

The hike to Canjerana Peak is an experience that blends physical challenge with visual reward. It is common to hear visitors say their “heart feels like it’s jumping out of their chest” during the ascent—but every step is worth it. At the top, the sense of freedom and direct contact with nature make this one of the most rewarding outings in Serra do Caraça.

Care and access restrictions

Like the other peaks of the Caraça Sanctuary, access to Canjerana Peak is limited to 11 people per day, including the registered guide or trail leader. This control is essential to preserve biodiversity and minimize human impact on the Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN), officially recognized by ICMBio under Ordinance No. 189/2013.

During the rainy season, access to the trails is often suspended for safety reasons. Rising stream levels, the emergence of springs, slippery terrain, and a high incidence of lightning make the route risky. For this reason, visitors are advised to check trail conditions before their visit and always follow the guidance provided by the sanctuary staff.
