Sun Peak (Pico do Sol) in Serra do Caraça, Minas Gerais

Among the seven peaks that form the majestic Serra do Caraça, Sun Peak (Pico do Sol) stands as the highest of them all and the culminating point of the Espinhaço Mountain Range, reaching 2,072 meters (6,798 feet) above sea level. Reaching the summit of this mountain is a true challenge for both body and spirit, requiring physical preparation, endurance, and determination.

Serra do Caraça is composed of seven main peaks—Pico do Sol, Pico do Inficionado, Pico da Carapuça, Pico da Canjerana, Pico da Conceição, Pico Três Irmãos, and Pico da Verruguinha—each with its own characteristics and levels of difficulty. Sun Peak, however, is the most emblematic, often referred to as the “King of Caraça” due to its altitude and the unparalleled views it offers from the top of the range.

As with all routes in the region, the presence of a certified guide registered with the Caraça Sanctuary is mandatory and essential to ensure safety, proper guidance, and compliance with environmental preservation rules.

The trail to Sun Peak

The hike to Sun Peak is approximately 10 kilometers (round trip) and is considered difficult, recommended only for visitors with good physical conditioning and prior experience on long and steep trails.

The route begins gently, leading hikers to Cascatinha, one of the most famous natural attractions in Serra do Caraça. This initial stretch of about 2 kilometers captivates visitors with crystal-clear waters and natural pools that reflect the blue sky before the waterfall plunges below.

After crossing the stream at the top of Cascatinha, the most demanding ascent begins. The trail passes through dense forest, rocky sections, and panoramic plateaus where hikers can take short breaks to rest and admire the scenery. One of these points is known as the Portal of the Peak Valley, a wide open area that marks the transition into a new landscape—the valley that leads toward the summit.

The trail continues through the valley, alternating between the rocky bed of a small stream and its winding banks. Near the end of the route, there is a natural shell-shaped rock shelter, an ideal place to regain energy before the final climb. This last stage requires extra effort but culminates in one of the most spectacular views in Serra do Caraça.

A viewpoint between sky and earth

From the summit of Sun Peak, visitors can see the entire Caraça complex and much of the Espinhaço Mountain Range, including the other peaks and valleys that make up this ancient geological formation. On clear days, visibility extends for dozens of kilometers, revealing distant mountains and the immense scale of the natural landscape.

The feeling of standing atop Serra do Caraça is indescribable. The silence of the high elevations, the cold wind, and the vast panorama create a sense of fulfillment and reverence. Many visitors describe the moment as a spiritual experience, marked by personal achievement and a profound connection with nature.

Access rules and safety recommendations

Sun Peak is located within the Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) of the Caraça Sanctuary, officially recognized by ICMBio under Ordinance No. 189/2013. For this reason, daily visitation is limited to 11 people, including the certified guide.

During the rainy season, access to the trails is suspended for safety reasons. Increased stream flow, the emergence of new springs, slippery terrain, and frequent lightning make the route hazardous. Before planning a visit, travelers are advised to check weather conditions and schedule their hike in advance with the sanctuary.

The Sun Peak trail is one of the most beautiful and challenging in Serra do Caraça—a true experience of adventure, contemplation, and respect for nature.
