Carapuça Peak in Serra do Caraça, Minas Gerais

Carapuça Peak in Serra do Caraça, Minas Gerais

Serra do Caraça is one of the most impressive natural destinations in Minas Gerais, composed of seven main peaks that both challenge and enchant visitors: Pico do Sol, Pico do Inficionado, Pico da Carapuça, Pico da Canjerana, Pico da Conceição, Pico Três Irmãos, and Pico da Verruguinha. Each of these peaks reveals unique landscapes, demanding trails, and an intense connection with nature.

Among them, Carapuça Peak is the closest to the Caraça Sanctuary and, for this reason, one of the most popular choices for visitors to the region. Its trail combines scenic beauty with physical challenge, making it one of the most memorable experiences within the Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) of the Caraça Sanctuary.

It is important to emphasize that, as this is a protected and environmentally sensitive area, all visits must be accompanied by a certified guide officially registered with the Caraça Sanctuary.

The route to the summit of Carapuça Peak

The trail to Carapuça Peak is approximately 3.8 kilometers long and reaches elevations of up to 1,955 meters (6,414 feet). The route begins near the sanctuary and heads toward the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Grotto of Lourdes, following an initial stretch that is calm and well-marked.

From this point onward, the trail becomes steeper and more demanding, requiring physical preparation, focus, and good coordination. The paths narrow, and in several sections it is necessary to rely on rocks and roots for support. The effort, however, is rewarded with breathtaking views and the refreshing shade of the forest, which helps ease the heat during the climb.

In the final meters before reaching the summit, visitors arrive at a panoramic plateau, where it is already possible to admire the Caraça Valley and parts of the other peaks. From there, the trail contours the mountain until it reaches the summit, marked by the ruins of a small structure—remnants of a former TV relay shelter from TV Vila Rica of Ouro Preto.

Panoramic views and spiritual connection

From the top of Carapuça Peak, the view is simply unforgettable. Visitors can observe nearly the entire Caraça Valley, all six other peaks of the range, and, on days with good visibility, even distant regions such as Serra do Capivari, Serra da Piedade, and Nova Lima.

Beyond the visual spectacle, there is a strong sense of spirituality that accompanies those who reach the summit. Seeing the Sanctuary of Our Lady, Mother of Humankind nestled in the valley and surrounded by green mountains is a scene that inspires silence and contemplation. Many guides describe this moment as an experience of gratitude and reverence for nature.

Important guidelines and safety considerations

As it lies within a protected conservation area, access to Carapuça Peak is limited to 11 people per day, including the certified guide. During the rainy season, trails can become slippery and dangerous, and temporary closures are common. Rising stream levels, frequent lightning, and the reemergence of springs make the route risky.

For this reason, advance scheduling is essential, and visitors must always be accompanied by a registered guide from the Caraça Sanctuary, who is familiar with trail conditions, water sources, and the necessary precautions to ensure a safe and environmentally responsible experience.
